Vikings win one and lose one in sectional tournament play

As the second season started, Ripley got things going with a split of the two Parkersburg teams.

The Vikings fell to Parkersburg South, 4-3, in the Class AAA Region IV, Section 2 Tournament and then bounced back with an 8-1 victory over the Big Reds of Parkersburg.

The Vikings outhit the Patriots, 7-3, but it’s the runs that count.

And that is where South held the advantage.

South and Ripley each scored two runs in the second inning.

The Patriots then took the lead with two more in the last of the third.

Ripley scored in the top of the sixth but could get no closer in dropping into the consolation bracket.

Davis Haynes had two hits for the Vikings to pace the offense.

Chase Pepper, Brett Haskins, Gage Songer and Isaiah Casto each collected one base hit.

Haskins was credited with an RBI.

Haynes pitched three innings for the Vikings. He gave up three hits, four runs (two earned), struck out two and walked four.

Cade Goode pitched two thirds of an inning and struck out two baters.

Gatlin Donohew pitched an inning and had two strike outs.

Patterson worked a third of an inning.

Facing elimination, Ripley was the one sidelining Parkersburg from the tournament.

The Vikings plated four runs in the second, three in the third and another in the fourth for the victory.

PHS garnered its lone run in the sixth.

Songer led Ripley with three hits while Haskins and Casto had two each.

The big blow in the game came off the bat of Andrew Manley, who drilled a three-run homer.

Goode also had a hit.

Goode, Songer and Cam Patterson drove home runs.

Besides his big hit at the plate, Manley got the win on the mound as he pitched five and two thirds. He gave up six hits and the lone Big Red run. He struck out five and walked six.

Donohew pitched an inning and a third in the contest.
