Viking wrestlers fall to Huntington

Ripley's Brett Haskins, a state runner-up in 2020, was one of the winners in a recent dual match against Huntington High.

Taking advantage of three Ripley forfeits turned the tide for Huntington High in the final team count of a dual with Matt Smith’s Vikings.

Ripley had to yield points to the Highlanders in the classes of 120, 182 and 220 and that helped pave the way to a 48-28 team victory for HHS.

In actual head-to-head competition, the Vikings held their own.

In the 113-pound class, Nate Cox picked up the first Viking victory in the dual with a 14-3 major decision over Huntington’s St. Clair.

Returning state runner-up Brett Haskins earned a victory with a 5-1 decision against Chapman.

Luke Miller at 132 captured a hard-fought 6-4 win over Winters.

Ripley’s final three victories in the match all came by way of pins.

Hunter Brown did so over Huntington’s Veazey in the 152-pound class.

Isaac Parsons was a winner in the 160-pound class.

The other Viking victory was by Matt Moore as he picked up a pin over Jones at 195.

Time is quickly closing on the condensed 2021 season.

As the sports calendar hits April, Ripley will not wrestle again until the Class AAA Region 4 Tournament at Parkersburg’s Memorial Field House on April 10.

Qualifiers will move on the state tournament in Huntington.

The AAA portion of the event this year is set for April 19 and April 20.
