With several past football greats inside Spano-Taylor Stadium at Flinn for Hall of Fame night, the current band of Ravenswood’s Red Devils hoped to impress those who played a part in adding to the school’s incredible history.

And early on, Eric Hupp’s Red Devils did just that against rival Roane County, who entered the game No. 7 in the Class AA ratings.

Senior Shawn Banks reeled off a 61-yard run in the opening quarter to put the Red Devils ahead as they set out for the upset. Ethan Tanner’s extra point gave Ravenswood a 7-0 advantage at the 6:20 mark.

Ravenswood Red Devil senior Shawn Banks begins his 61-yard jaunt to the end zone in a showdown with Roane County Friday night, Oct. 29.

From there, it was all Roane County.

The Raiders scored not only a TD in the first quarter, but went ahead thanks to a 2-point conversion.

The Raiders would go on to score one touchdown in each of the final three quarters in handing the Devils a 28-7 setback.

The loss brought Ravenswood’s difficult season to an end at 0-10. Roane County improved to 6-2 with the victory and kept alive its hopes of hosting an opening-round Class AA playoff game.

The Raiders first quarter score came from a yard out as quarterback Shadraq Greathouse found the end zone.

In the second quarter, Briar Begler dashed in from six yards away and the Raiders added another 2-pointer try to go up 16-7 at halftime.

In the third, Greathouse scored on another 1-yard run.

Begler punched in the final TD from the 2-yard line in the final 12 minutes of play.

Both 2-point tries after the TDs were unsuccessful.

Banks finished the game for Ravenswood with 64 yards on five carries.

Isaiah Casto carried seven times for 34 yards. Jacob Bowling, Wyatt Milhoan and Deondre Briggs each carried once for no yardage.

Jacob Bowling passed for 28 yards, completing 2-of-7. Both completions were to Banks. The Raider defense came up with two interceptions in the game.

Banks also completed one pass in the game for six yards to Xavier Rodriguez.

The defense was led by Brett Parsons who had a monster game with 12 tackles. Jaden Sayre also collected double figures in stops with 10.

Three different players had eight tackles for Ravenswood in Rodriguez, Briggs and Wes Hill.

Ethan Lane had seven stops, Banks came up with six while Tyce Price had five. Zane Balis finished with four. Brandon Haynes and Bowling each had two. John Eden, Blake Ball and J.J. Lent all had one.

Roane closes out its season Friday, Nov. 5, against the Sissonville Indians as they look to remain in Class AA’s upper tier.
