State cross country preview: Ripley girls head to Ona for AAA; Pepper set to compete

A pair of returning All-Staters from Ripley will be back running the Chris Parsons Course in Ona on the Cabell Midland High School campus Saturday, Oct. 30.

That is where the 2021 West Virginia High School State Cross Country Meet will be unfolding once again.

Both Ellie Hosaflook and Chase Pepper earned Class AAA All-State a year ago with Top 10 performances.

Hosaflook is a sophomore while Pepper will be running the last meet of his outstanding high school career.

Hosaflook placed third in the Class AAA Region IV Meet at Cedar Lakes to lead her Lady Viking team with a time of 20:24.

A year ago, Hosaflook was third at the state meet in Ona with a time of 18:51.

Ripley’s third place showing qualified the entire team for the state meet.

The regional competition saw Hadleigh McCune place 12th in a time of 22:13, Opal Huffman was 13th by registering a time of 22:14, and Tori Fisher had a Top 20 finish by crossing the finish line in a time of 23:04.

Emma Shockey was 22nd with a time of 23:40 and Emily Dunlap placed 32nd with a time of 25:24.

Pepper’s time of 18:07 earned him the 10th spot in the individual standings. It's his fourth consecutive year of qualifying for the state meet.

Last year, he was ninth in a time of 16:41. As a sophomore, he placed 14th and was 15th as a freshman.

The Vikings placed fifth as a team overall in the Region IV Meet.

Max Meadows was 19th in a time of 18:53, Davin Rose placed 18th, registering a time of 20:37, Cole Neal crossed the finish line in a time of 21:22 to place 33rd, Oliver Marks completed the course at Cedar Lakes with a 24:27 clocking for 42nd and Trey Greer was 47th with a recorded time of 25:52.

The Class AAA girls race Saturday will get underway at 11:45 a.m. while the boys race begins at 12:30.
