Viking wrestlers take on Park and Point

Ripley High wrestling has a rich history.

And on the mats recently, Matt Smith’s Vikings were involved in dual matches with a pair of programs who certainly have a past to be proud of when it comes to the sport.

The Vikings engaged in matches with both Wheeling Park, a notable Class AAA contender year in and year out, and Point Pleasant, who is presently riding a wave of success with two straight Class AA-A state titles.

In the match with Park, Ripley got three wins by pin from 113-pounder Nate Cox, Dakota Parsons at 160 and 195-pounder Matt Moore. Brock Matson at 120 picked up a forfeit.

The lone winner in the match with the Big Blacks, who return five state champions from a year ago, was Moore with a 3-2 decision at 195.

The shortened season of high school wrestling, due to COVID-19, has primarily been one of dual matches. Teams are gearing up for the regionals next month followed by the state tournament, which is set for April 19-22 inside Huntington’s Mountain Health Arena.
