Ravenswood wrestlers grinding away in 2021

It is the season of dual matches for high school wrestling teams in West Virginia, with only a select few tournaments taking place until the regionals and state events come around next month.

Ravenswood’s Red Devil wrestlers have gone against some stiff competition since the 2021 campaign got underway in early March.

The start date is extremely strange considering most seasons in the past would have wrapped up by the end of February.

But with the twice-delayed season due to COVID-19, teams are trying to hit the mats as much as possible to be ready for that all-important regional and state tournament competition.

Two team victories for the Devils were posted recently over Chapmanville, 36-34, and Mingo Central, 42-18.

In the Chapmanville dual, Ethan Tanner and Ethan Lane both were victorious by pins. Tanner, wrestling in the 148-pound class, took care of Connor Farley in the second period, while Lane, competing in the heavyweight division, also won in the second period over Kaleb Mooney.

Jordan Varney (123), Wyatt Milhoan (135), Lodan Hess (141) and Saquain Oliva (155) were winners by forfeit.

Against Mingo Central, Hess (141) pinned Nathan Hynd in the third period. Varney (123), Jeremy Brewer (129), Milhoan (135), Tanner (148), Oliva (155) and Lane (HWT) all received forfeits.

In a match with Wahama, Tannner registered a pin over Kegan Peters in the second period.

Tanner was also a winner in a team dual showdown with Williamstown, coming away with a first period pin of Chase Trembly.

In a dual with Winfield, three Devil wrestlers picked up victories. Milhoan (135-pound class) and Lane (HWT) both won by pinning their opponents. Milhoan won in the second period over Colton Ford while Lane’s slap of the mat came in the third period against Zander Huffman. Tanner picked up a 16-4 major decision victory over Gavin Legg.

In a faceoff with Nitro, Varney (123), Hess (141), Oliva (155) and Lane (HWT) were all awarded forfeits.

Squaring off with Roane County, Brewer (129), Milhoan (135), Tanner (141) and Lane (HWT) picked up wins on the mat. Brewer pinned Chase Beckner in the third period with just 15 seconds remaining in the match; Tanner stopped Drake Smith in the second period as did Lane against Justin Roberts.

Milhoan won by a 7-0 decision over Russell May. Hess (148) was credited with a forfeit.

A forfeit for Lane was the lone win in a dual with Wirt County.

In a second meeting of the season with Wahama, Milhoan (135), Hess (148) and Lane (HWT) all had first period pins over William Johnson, Kegan Peters and Ethan Lane, respectively. Brewer (129) picked up a forfeit in the match.

Dual number two of the season with Wirt County had Milhoan as the loan winner by decision against Garrett Parsons, 5-2.

Facing off with Doddridge for a first time, Milhoan (135), Hess (141) and Tanner (148) earned victories. Hess pinned Deshawn Hyde in the second, Tanner just beat the end of the first period clock to pin Caleb Lloyd while Milhoan registered a major decision over Joseph Powers, 18-9.
