Sports championship schedules revised

Mark Martin

Once again, dates for West Virginia high school winter sports championship events (along with spring sports) have been changed…here is hoping this schedule sticks.

As was noted in The Jackson Star News on Friday, the start of practices and actual competition for the winter sports of swimming, wrestling and girls and boys basketball were set with the postseason schedule still to come.

The run for a state championship in those three sports has now been set into place.

February 15 is going to be the official start of preseason practices (February 14 had been first reported) for the sports that have been on hold since November because of the coronavirus.

Swimming, wrestling and girls basketball had actually started preseason workouts late in November when Governor Jim Justice announced a delay in winter sports until January. Boys basketball practices were about to begin in November, but never got underway because of the decision to halt the preseason period.

The January start time was then moved to March 1 with no definitive decision on whether that was for the beginning of practices or competition.

With another revision, winter sports teams finally have a plan for their seasons.

Practices for swimming, wrestling and girls basketball will resume on February 15. The first actual competition will be March 3.

Boys basketball teams will also start practices February 15 but will not be permitted to play their first game until March 5.

The West Virginia High School State Swim Meet is scheduled for April 20-21 in Morgantown.

Huntington will host the State Wrestling Tournament April 21-24, which will be a four-day affair in 2021 as opposed to the usual three-day deal.

The Girls State Basketball Tournament is set for April 27-May 1 (West Virginia moves from three classes to four this season).

The Boys State Tournament is slated for the following week (May 4-8).

The two basketball events will be staged at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

In normal times, swimming and wrestling seasons would wrap up in February with basketball coming to a close in March.

Things will get interesting for some athletes who play sports in the spring.

Practices are slated to begin for the four spring offerings of tennis, track and field, softball and baseball on March 15.

The State Tennis Tournament in Charleston is set for June 3-5.

The State Track and Field Meet at University of Charleston Stadium/Laidley Field is going to be a three-day event this year instead of two. The days of June 10, 11 and 12 will feature Class A, Class AA and Class AAA competition, respectively.

Softball championships will be played in South Charleston, where the event was slated to debut last spring but was cancelled due to the pandemic, June 22-23.

Baseball championships will take place June 24-26 at Charleston’s Appalachian Power Park.

Jackson County's two high schools and middle schools - Ravenswood and Ripley - offer sports in all but swimming. Middle school tennis is played in the fall.
