Former Ravenswood High golf standout Alex Easthom was holding his own through the first two rounds of the 87th annual West Virginia Open, being played this week on the Cobb Course of The Resort at Glade Springs just outside of Beckley in Daniels.

The prestigious event, administered by the West Virginia Golf Association, was slated to wrap up yesterday (Thursday). The Open features both amateurs, like Easthom, and professionals.

In Tuesday’s opening round, Easthom, who plays on the collegiate level for West Liberty University, fired a 1-over-par 73 putting him in a four-way tie for 13th overall.

Parkersburg professional Kenneth Hess was the first-round leader carding a 3-under 69 on the par-72 layout.

Five golfers were in a tie for second after shooing rounds of 1-under. Six more finished the first set of 18 holes at even-par.

Easthom nearly duplicated his first-round score in Wednesday’s second round by finishing with a 2-over-par 74. The score put him at 3-over for the Open and continued to leave him in a four-way tie for 13th

Thad Obecny II, a pro from Wheeling, moved to the top of the leaderboard with a second round of 70. That coupled with his first-round score of 71 put him at 3-under for the tournament.
