Stage plays to feature Jackson County youth
Two summer theatrical productions are reaching out to the youth of Jackson County.
Starbursts Children’s Theater is for those in kindergarten through seventh grade. They are to perform a large cast version of the classic “Peter Pan.”
Rising Stars Youth Theater is for those in seventh grade through age 21. They are performing “Tragedians Anonymous: Shakespeare’s Tragic Characters in Therapy ... Virtually.”
Both productions are created and continued by the Jackson County Players.
The children’s theater program has been active for more than a decade, according to Doug Torres, president of Jackson County Players and director of the plays.
“It’s a great opportunity for young people to be involved in a production,” said Torres. “That includes acting roles on stage as well as behind-the-scenes roles. It costs nothing to participate.”
“Peter Pan” is the timeless story of a young boy who can fly and never grows up, by J.M. Barrie. This large cast version was adapted by Kathryn Schultz Miller.
Rehearsals for the children's theater are scheduled from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June in the Alpine Theatre. Showtimes are 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, and Tuesday, June 29, in the Alpine Theatre.
“Tragedians Anonymous” is a light-hearted look into four of Shakespeare’s memorable characters. In this play, they are forced to remain in lockdown with a self-help group.
“It is a chance to do Shakespeare, but in the language of today,” said Torres, a music education major with a background in theater at West Liberty University.
Rehearsals for the youth theater are from 4-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June in the Alpine Theatre. The performance is at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, in the Alpine Theatre.
