On Saturday, March 27, members of The Old Hickory Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will honor Jackson County’s veterans from the Vietnam War. The event is sponsored by the United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration.

Mary Pistelli, chair of the Old Hickory Chapter Veterans Committee, said that while the official recognition day is March 29, the group felt that Saturday would give a better opportunity.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, the event will be drive-by from 11 am to 1 pm.

“We will be giving each veteran a lapel pin and other items to show our appreciation of their service,” said Pistelli.

While recognizing that many veterans of that conflict are often reluctant to take part in events, Pistelli said she hopes that several will come to Cedar Lakes that day.

“We have over 100 Vietnam veterans in Jackson County,” she said. “I truly hope that they will come by for this simple demonstration of our gratitude.”

President Barack Obama, in 2012, declared March 29 Vietnam Veterans Day. In 2017, President Donald Trump made it official when he signed the bill establishing March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

On March 29, 1973, the last United States combat troops left South Viietnam.
