Bethel Baptist Church opens food pantry

Bethel Baptist Church located at 640 Pleasant Valley Road in Given is excited to be able to announce they are starting a food pantry.

Members of the church, led by Pastor Jeff Halstead, realized back in October 2020 that the Lord was lying on their hearts the need to open a food pantry for those in need in southern Jackson County. Following a few donations from members and other local individuals, the church began to research other avenues in obtaining food for their pantry.

Unable to obtain government funding, it was decided to try for non-profit status by applying for a 501c3 license from the IRS. Unfortunately, their initial application for non-profit status was denied and they were informed they would need to reapply with additional information.

Without the 501c3 status, they are unable to reach out to local businesses for pantry donations, and food banks ask for pantries to include income guidelines, which Bethel Baptist has decided not to do. They want to be able to assist anyone who may need their services.

Hoping to open in February, the Pleasant Valley Food Pantry will begin servicing patrons every third Wednesday, once a month, between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon.

Those in need will be required to preregister so boxes can be made and ready for pickup at the church during the listed times above.

The only information needed to preregister for a box is the name and number of people in the family. To preregister or obtain additional information on the pantry, contact Terri Lyons by phone at 304-761-4042 or email telyons57@yahoo.com.

Donations of food, both perishable and non-perishable, or financial donations will gladly be accepted.

According to the church, they just want to feed people physically and spiritually.

For additional information on the church itself, regarding services and times, contact Pastor Jeff Halstead at 304-532-4284.
