A semi-truck caught on fire after striking the fuel tank on a bridge on I-77.

A semi-truck accident on Sunday afternoon tied up traffic for several hours on I-77. Both northbound lanes were shut down and traffic was being detoured. The accident occurred less than two miles from the Silverton exit, northbound.

According to the driver of the semi, he must have “dozed off” and hit the guardrail, causing him to swerve back onto the road, clipping his fuel tank on the entrance to the bridge. The truck was a total loss; however, the driver was able to jump out of the cab before it caught on fire. Other than being shaken up, the driver sustained no injuries.

Crews were on scene to clean up the fuel spill from the accident.
