Jackson County’s courthouse offices have reopened to the public.

At the May 27 meeting of the Jackson County Commission, the emergency policy declaration enacted on March 20 was amended. This amendment will “facilitate a gradual return to all government building access and work beginning on Wednesday, May 27, 2020.”

Certain general guidelines pertained to any access to the building. Each elected official and department head were given the authority to enact policies that will limit person to person contact.

Entrance to the courthouse is limited to the Maple Street entrance. Temperature checks will continue for visitors and employees. Anyone whose temperature registers 100.4 or higher, has a cough, shortness of breath, or flu-like symptoms cannot enter the building. Six-feet social distancing will be required.

Masks are encouraged but not required except in magistrate and family court.

Individual office guidelines:

• Tax Department – Only two windows will be open to adhere to social distancing. After business is completed, patrons will exit through the side door. Public is encouraged to pay taxes by mail or by calling the tax office at 304-373-2280.

• County Clerk – Marriage licenses are by appointment only and limited to the two applicants. The record room is open to attorneys, surveyors and other researchers for one-hour appointments, limited to two people at a time. Probation of estates is by appointment only. Request for documents, such as birth and death records or marriage certificates, can be made by phone or email. Early voting will be conducted from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. For information, call 304-373-2250.

• Assessor— located in a separate building, temperature check is not required. Only two to three visitors are allowed at a time and six-feet social distancing is required. Countertop plexiglass barriers have been installed in public areas. Call 304-373-2240 (real estate) or 304-373-2230 (personal property).

• Magistrate/Circuit Court – No one is permitted in the courtroom until called. Temperature check and masks are required, including the circuit judge and magistrates. Strict social distancing is enforced. Contact Circuit Clerk at 304-373-2210 for information.
