There are times in athletics where a team will simply endure a long night.
Ravenswood’s Red Devil football squad lived through one of those nights on Friday inside Flinn Field at Spano-Taylor Stadium.
Williamstown captured an impressive 61-7 over the Red Devils, marking the program's seventh win in the last eight meetings between the two.
Chris Beck’s Yellowjackets are now 2-0 on the season while Ravenswood’s young Devils fell to 0-2.
“We knew what we had coming in,” said Red Devil head coach Eric Hupp.
Meaning Hupp knew his Devils would have to play flawless against a Williamstown program that has been one of Class A’s best in the past several years. The Yellowjackets were coming off a win over cross-river rival Marietta.
Ravenswood had fallen in its season opener to Buffalo, who appears to have the making of a Class A playoff contender in 2020.
“We knew Williamstown was going to be a good team,” said Hupp.
The Yellowjackets showed just how good with two first quarter touchdowns – a 36-yard run by Brayden Modesitt and an 11-yard run by Trevor Oates. Ravenswood blocked the first extra point try by the Yellowjackets with the second being successful for a 13-0 lead after the opening 12 minutes of play.
Three more scores were produced by Wiliamstown in the second quarter. Modesitt got in from the 9-yard line, Richie Allen scored from the 7-yard line and Modesitt hit Kent Wigal on a short 1-yard pass to give the ‘Jackets a comfortable 33-0 advantage going into halftime.
In the third, Williamstown scored four more times on a 12-yard run by Oates, a 30-yard punt return by Caleb Stansberry, a 5-yard run by T.J. Billingsley and a 1-yard fumble recovery by Jacob Conney.
Ravenswood got on the board in the fourth when quarterback Ben Queen fired a 63-yard pass to Shawn Banks. Ethan Tanner added the point after.
Despite the tough loss, Hupp looked and found positives from the contest.
“We made some improvements with the blocking scheme,” he said. “I felt like in the middle of the third quarter things started clicking for us.”
Queen was 4-of-9 passing for 85 yards and the touchdown.
Litton carried the football 10 times for 27 yards. Queen rushed 12 times for 13 yards. Fletcher had two carries for 18 yards. Banks carried twice for eight yards. Hill had three on one. Casto picked up one yard on one carry.
Banks had two receptions for 78 yards and the TD. Litton hauled in one pass for four yards and Hill one for three yards.
Wes Hill led the defensive charge for the Devils with seven tackles. Caleb Lane had six.
Others in the tackling department for Ravenswood were Banks, Bryson Litton and Brett Parsons (4). Ethan Lane, Zach Johnson and Mason Stutler (3). J.J. Lent, Xavier Rodriguez, Brandon Haynes, Jaden Sayre and Queen (2). Isaiah Casto, Case Fletcher, Zane Balis, Blake Ball, Carl Archer and Jordan Varney (1).
Johnson and Ethan Lane each had a tackle for a loss. Haynes had an interception.
Ravenswood will journey to County Stadium in Spencer Friday for a showdown with a 0-2 Roane County Raider squad.
