A few days following Christmas, Ripley’s wrestling team ventured to the area near the Festival of Lights for competition on the mats.
The beautiful Festival of Lights display can be enjoyed each year at Ogelbay Park in Wheeling.
The Vikings were nearby at Wheeling Park High School for the Wheeling Park Duals.
Matt Smith’s crew picked up wins over Morgantown, 63-12, Brooke, 57-14, and Bethel Tate, 54-19.
The Vikings just missed another team win by dropping a match to St. Xavier, 37-36.
Ripley also fell to Massilon Jackson, 44-26, and Carrolton, 72-6.
St. Xavier 37-Ripley 36
Ripley started hot by picking up five straight wins, four in head-to-head competition and a forfeit but could only manage two more victories the rest of the way in the narrow team defeat.
Brock Matson at 106 got things going with a 5-3 decision. His win was followed with pins by Brett Haskins at 113, Nate Cox at 120 along with a 7-2 decision at 126 by Luke Miller.
At 182, Austin Boggess picked up a close, 7-6, decision.
Ripley 63-Morgantown 12
In a dominating performance, the Vikings got points with five pins, a decision and five forfeits.
Miller at 126, King at 132, Evan Shouldis at 138, Boggess at 182 and Matt Moore at 285 registered the pins in the win over the Mohigans.
Haskins won a 6-4 decision at 113.
Massilon Jackson 44-Ripley 26
The Vikings battled in a dual that featured 13 head-to-head matches but came up a bit short.
Ripley got a pin by Ethan Koontz at 152 while King dominated at 132 with a 17-2 technical fall victory.
At 126, Miller captured a 3-1 decision with Boggess recording a 7-0 shutout at 182. Ethan Bryant posted a 4-2 shutout at 195. Ripley got points for the lone forfeit at 285.
Carrolton 72-Ripley 6
Against powerful Carrolton, Ohio, the Vikings got wins at 113 and 132.
Haskins garnered a 7-0 win at 113 for Ripley while King was an 11-5 winner in the 132-pound match.
Ripley 57-Brooke 14
The Vikings gained points with four pins, three decisions and four forfeits.
Cox at 126, Eli Koontz at 145, Dakota Parsons at 170 and Tanner Ross at 220 all won by pinning their opponent.
Haskins won a 6-2 decision at 113, Miller recorded a 3-0 decision at 126 and Ethan Koontz won by a 3-2 count in the 152-pound match.
Ripley 54-Bethel Tate 19
The Vikings enjoyed the sound of the referee’s hand hitting the mat in their dual with Bethel Tate.
Six pins led to the 54-19 team victory.
Cox at 120, Miller at 126, Parsons at 170, Boggess at 182, Bryant at 195 and Ross at 220 recorded the pins for the Vikings.
Haskins captured an 8-1 in the 113-pound class while Jarrett Paugh was a 3-2 winner at 160.
