The calendar year has flipped and Eric Hupp’s Ravenswood Red Devil wrestlers have been hard at work, both in the mat room and in competitive showdowns, to reach their goal of making the State Tournament come late February.
The Devils have had plenty going on the last few weeks from a tournament standpoint and in head-to-head matches.
Jackson County Invitational
Ravenswood placed second in its own tournament last month.
In fact, they were just two points shy of winning the Jackson County Invitational at the Old Gymnasium in Ravenswood.
Wirt County took home the championship trophy by amassing 133 points. The Devils were right there knocking on the title door with 131.
Other team totals were: Huntington, Ohio (126.5), Independence JV (125), Roane County (123.5), Point Pleasant JV (112.50), Williamstown (96.5), St. Marys (74), Nitro (72), Wahama (58), Logan (49), Calhoun County (37.5), Capital (24), Lincoln County (24) and Mingo Central (19).
Ravenswood’s Cody Smith gave Ravenswood a champion in the 132-pound class.
Timmy Adkins earned a second place finish at 113 for Ravenswood.
At 120, Ethan Tanner placed third.
Fourth place finishers for the Devils were Elijah Newcomb at 126, Colton Clark at 152, Chase Hood at 160, Dalton Moore at 182 and Ethan Lane at 220.
Other champions included Logan Powell of Wirt County at 106, Independence’s Daylen Gilkerson at 113, Wiley Houser of St. Marys at 120, Wyatt Powell of Wirt County at 126, Roane County’s David Rhodes at 138, Trevor Hunt of Wahama at 145, Roane County’s Gavin Black at 152, Jake Whiting of Roane County at 160, Calhoun’s Dalton McCune at 170, Huntington, Ohio’s Scott Pontious at 182, Glenn McFee of Wirt Clounty at 195, Antonio Serevicz of Wahama at 220 and Nitro’s Will Frampton at 285.
Williamstown 45-Ravenswood 24
In a match dominated by forfeits on both sides, Williamstown defeated Ravenswood, 45-24, last month at Calhoun County High School in Mt. Zion.
Ethan Tanner at 120 was the only Devil wrestler to pick up a win in actual competition, doing so with a pin. The other Devil points were produced by forfeits.
Ravenswood 42-Calhoun 18
A slew of forfeits dominated this Battle of the Red Devils.
Houston Kessell at 138, Preston Means at 145, Clayton Tanner at 160 and 285-pounder Zack Graham all recorded pins. The other Ravenswood wins were by forfeits.
Lewis County 48-Ravenswood 30
Ravenswood’s only wins in the match with the Minutemen were by forfeits.
The Devils fell in four head-to-head showdowns.
Doddridge 48-Ravenswood 24
Smith got a pin at 132 and Dalton Moore did the same at 182 in the loss to the Bulldogs.
Ravenswood’s other points came by way of forfeits.
The Devils lost three other head-to-head matches.
