In another nip-and-tuck basketball game, Ravenswood’s Runnin’ Red Devils came up short in this still very young 2018-19 high school season.
The Devils dropped a 52-46 decision on the road Friday night to the Wirt County Tigers sending their record to 1-2 on the year.
The win on the other hand improved Wirt County to 3-1 in the December portion of the schedule.
Hunter Hickman had a huge night for the Tigers with 21 points.
Trey Mandrake was Ravenswood’s leader with 16.
The Devils took lead at 11-10 following the first eight minutes of play.
Wirt responded by outscoring the Devils in the second quarter, 15-11, for a 25-22 halftime lead.
Ravenswood again outscored Wirt by one point, 13-12, in the third quarter to make it a 37-35 count going into the fourth.
In the final eight of action, Wirt managed a 15-11 edge to secure the win.
Mandrake made six field goals and was 2-of-3 at the line. Two of his shots from the floor were 3-pointers.
Devin Raines and Zach Burgess aided Mandrake in scoring as each scored eight. Both players had a 3-pointer and were 1-of-1 at the free throw line.
Nick Westenhaver finished the game with seven points. He had a pair of field goals and was 3-of-4 at the line.
Patrick Francis had four points in the loss with two made field goals.
Ben Queen rounded out the scoring by knocking down a 3-pointer.
Ravenswood was 17-of-38 from the field and 5-of-16 from behind the arc.
At the line, the Devils were 7-of-9.
In the rebounding department, Ravenswood had a team total of 17. Westenhaver had five and Raines pulled down four. Mandrake had three.
The Devils came up with 12 steals in the game with Westenhaver leading the way with four and Raines coming away with three. Mandrake finished with two.
Burgess had four of the team’s eight assists.
In the junior varsity game, Ravenswood moved to 2-1 with a 51-25 victory.
Ashton Miller was the top scorer for Ravenswood with 13.
Colton Goodwin was in double figures with 12 as was Case Fletcher, who finished with 10.
Seth Marra scored five in the game while Ben Queen had four.
DeShone Cooper, Austin Creel and Devon Fields all had two.
Cameron Taylor rounded out the scoring with one.
Ravenswood will play its final pre-Christmas game this Friday by making the trip to St. Marys for a showdown with the Blue Devils with the hope being to even the season record at 2-2.
