CHARLESTON – Through the years, Ravenswood High track and field teams have produced a great tradition when it comes to the 4x800 meter relay event.
Those outstanding 4x8 foursomes of the past most usually helped launch outstanding meet performances for Red Devil teams at various meets.
It was certainly like old times Friday afternoon at UC Stadium as Ravenswood’s 4x800 team of 2017 finished second in the Class A portion of the prestigious Gazette-Mail/Friends of Coal Relays.
The performances by Blake Jarrell, Bryce Jarrell, Chris Murray and Devon Searls, who combined for a second place time of 8:56.57, got things rolling in a positive direction for Todd Murray’s squad and ultimately led to a fourth place finish in the two-day affair.
The Devils finished with 54 points in the meet. Powerful Doddridge won Class A running away from the field with 155 points. Tyler Consolidated was second with 103 and Buffalo third with 67.
Bryce Jarrell turned in Ravenswood’s lone first in the meet by winning the 800 meters in a time of 2:07.20. He was also second individually in the 3200 meters with a time of 10:08.26.
With the 4x800 team getting the Devils off to a solid start with that second place finish, it was only fitting the 4x400 squad gave Ravenswood a strong finish by once more placing second in the final event of the meet. Jarrell, Jarrell, Murray and Searls were again the four to make up the relay. They turned in a time of 3:47.63.
Placing third for the Devils were Austin Garrett in the 200 meters (23.78) and Blake Jarrell in both the 1600 (4:46.10) and 3200 (10:21.81).
Two other relay teams – the 4x100 (49.49) and the shuttle hurdle (1:36.75) – placed sixth in the meet. The 4x100 team featured Garrett, Jacob Tanner, Clayton Tanner and Colton Clark. The shuttle unit consisted of Sam Taylor, Clay Tanner, Spencer Williams and Ethan Chase.
Ravenswood now turns its attention to the Little Kanawha Conference Meet on Friday at Morris Stadium in Glenville. Regionals and the State Meet are forthcoming for the Devils.
