Morgan wins 170-pound bracket

HUNTINGTON – Head coach Matt Smith’s Class AAA No. 4-ranked Ripley Viking wrestling team placed first in the Class AAA field at the prestigious WSAZ Invitational tournament at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena in Huntington last weekend.  

The Vikings amassed 164 points, placing second overall behind Class AA/A winner Independence, but finished first among Class AAA teams.  

Individually, Ripley had eight placers, led by senior Chase Morgan, who won the 170-pound bracket after defeating Independence’s Adam Daniels in a 6-4 overtime decision.

 Senior Antony Jarvis and junior B.J. Haynes each finished in second place in their respective weight classes.  Jarvis lost a heartbreaker to Nitro’s Paul Frampton in the 185-pound title match, losing by decision 4-3. 

Haynes dropped a tough 11-4 decision to Independence’s Noah Adams in the 220-pound championship match.  Adams is the top ranked 220-pound wrestler in the Class AA/A division.

Also placing for the Vikings were: Jacob Starkey, third at 145-pounds; Chance Morgan, fifth at 182-pounds; Josh Sinclair, sixth at 113-pounds; Tyler Haskins, sixth at 126-pounds; and Hunter Burdette, sixth at 132 pounds.

Ripley returns to the mats on Friday traveling to Class AAA No. 3 Huntington.
