ST. MARYS – Undefeated St. Marys (9-0) torched Ravenswood special teams for three kick return scores and turned a blocked punt and four Red Devil turnovers into touchdowns in a 63-13 rout Friday night.
Little went right for the Red Devils (4-5) after a promising first drive ended with a holding penalty, and Braden Barnhart took a punt 78 yards to the house for the first points of the game. George Krough booted the PAT and St. Marys led 7-0 with 6:31 left in the opening quarter.
Fumble recoveries set up the next two Blue Devils scores. Jaiden Smith scored from three yards out on a two-play, six-yard drive after a fumble recovery with 5:27 left in the first quarter; and Smith scored on 14-yard run to cap a five-play, 43-yard march after another fumble recovery with 1:21 left in the first quarter. Krough booted one of two PATs, and St. Marys led 20-0.
Ravenswood got on the board on a defensive play, when linebacker Luke Jackson scooped up a SM fumble caused by Alex Casto and raced 61 yards for a touchdown with 8:23 left in the second quarter. A fumbled PAT snap led to a an incomplete pass for two points and a 20-6 deficit.
Smith answered immediately returning the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a St. Marys touchdown. Krough kicked the PAT and the Blue Devils led 27-6 with 8:08 left in the first half.
Barnhart scored again on a 12-yard run to cap a three-play, 22-yard drive set up by a punt block by Dalton Housser. Korugh booted the PAT and St. Marys led 34-6 with 3:27 left in the second quarter.
St. Marys scored again with 0:44.1 seconds left in the first half on a 10-yard run by Matt Eichhorn to cap a quick, three-play, 34-yard drive against a Red Devil defense who had checked out. Krough booted the PAT for a 41-6 lead at the half.
Smith set the tone for the second half by returning the opening kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown. Barnhart passed to Dylan Grey for the two-point converson and St. Marys led 49-6 with 11:45 left in the third quarter.
Another Red Devil fumble set up Will Billeter for a 16-yard TD run to cap a short TD march with 10:39 left in the third quarter. Krough booted the PAT and St. Marys led 56-6.
An Elijah Eades interception of a max Hilton pass set up the final St. Marys TD of the game on a 10-yard run by Derek Smith with 6:17 left in the third quarter. Ian Kelley booted the PAT and the Blue Devils led 63-6.
Ravenswood put together a 15-play, 65-yard scoring march against the Blue Devils reserves of the final points of the night. Jake Green subbing for injured Alex Casto got the TD on a two-yard run. Ryan Cunningham booted the PAT with 10:26 left in the fourth quarter for the final margin of 63-13.
On the night, Alex Casto was held to 61 yards 4rushing on 22 carries. Luke Jackson added eight carries for 55 yards; Jake Green, five carries for 11 yards (TD); Sam Sturm, three carries for zero net yards; Hayden Mandrake, two carries for negative three yards; and Max Hilton, five carries for negative 15 yards. As a team, the Red Devils carried 45 times for 109 net rushing yards.
Max Hilton completed two of six passes for 55 yards with an interception. Hayden Mandrake had one catch for 38 yards; and Alex Casto, one for 17 yards.
Ravenswood was held to 164 yards of total offense with 10 first downs (seven via rush, two via pass and one via penalty) and drew seven flags for 45 penalty yards.
Ryan Cunningham punted three times with a 35-yard average and kicked off three times with a 46-yard average. Alex Casto had eight kickoff returns for 145 yards; and Hayden Mandrake, one for three yards.
Derrick Smith led the Blue Devils with four carries for 49 yards and a TD. Zac Long carried once for 43 yards; and Jaiden Smith carried six times for 28 yards and two TDs.
As a team, St. Mary carried 23 times for 203 rushing yards and six TDs.
Will Billiter completed three of four passes for 51 yards.
St. Marys totaled 269 offensive yards with 11 first downs (nine via rish and two via pass) and drew 10 flags for 85 penalty yards.
On defense, Max Hilton led the Red Devils with four tackles. Hayden Mandrake and Alex Casto (TKL, FF) added three stops each; Luke Jackson, two and a fumble recovery returned for a TD; and Ryan Bailey, Elijah Benson, Logan Coleman, Jake Greene, Wayne Stephenson, Sam Taylor, Jacob White, Sam Sturm and JoJo Menas, one tackle each.
Ravenswood (4-5) hosts Ripley (3-6) Friday night at Flinn Field in the 62nd Battle for the Hatchet.
