RAVENSWOOD – The 2016 Ravenswood Red Devilette Volleyball Team, AKA Braham’s Flying Circus, wote their names in program history Saturday at The Pit by tying the program record (32 season match wins) and then setting a new all-time season match wins record with their 33rd.
The Devilettes shook off the emotions of pre-match Senior Day ceremonies to win a nail-biting 2-1 games match over Calhoun County (25-20, 20-25, 25-18) to nail down the No. 3 seed for double-elimination Class A Region IV, Section 1 Tournament that opened last (Monday) night at The Pit and RvHS Physical Education Building.
The Devilettes then took down Greater Beckley Christian in straight games (25-10, 25-19) to set the new program record for season match wins. In the final game, coaches Gary Braham and Chris Michael subbed out the four seniors, one at a time, to a standing ovation from fans.
Ravenswood (33-16) hopes to ride the wave of Saturday’s tri-sweep to a two two finish in the sectional tournament, which will punch ticket to Saturday’s four-team single elimination regional playoff with a pair of Class A state tournament berths on the line.
In the current douible-elimination sectional tourney, Ravenswood opened last (Monday) night versus #6-seed Wahama with the winner to face #2-seed Wirt County in the winners’ bracket semifinals, also last night. No. 4 seed Calhoun County faced No. 5 seed Parkersburg Catholic with the winner to take on No. 1 seed Williamstown in the other winners’ bracket semifinal last night.
Saturday at The Pit, Lauren Hoff paced the Devilettes past Calhoun County with 25 points. Katie Mellinger added 13; Bayli Manns, Erica Green and Dominek Brown, seven each; Kendall Bowen, six; and Molly McCutcheon and Macey Manns, one each.
Ravenswood trailed 14-11 in the final game, before going on a 10-1 run to take charge and win the match.
Bowen was the top server at 16/17 (four aces) and passer (42/25). Bayli Manns served three aces and Mellinger two. Manns was 98/101 in sets. Hoff was the top spiker (37/38-18 kills) and blocker with Mellinger (six each). Mellingrer had nine kills; Brown, five; and Bayli Manns, two. Bayli Manns added one block.
Tori Allen paced the Lady Red Devils with 15 points.
Hoff led the way in the history-making win over Greater Beckley Christian with 14 points. Mellinger added 13; Brown, six; McCutcheon, Macey Manns and Green, four each; Bowen, two; and Bayli Manns and Hannah Heatherington, one each.
McCutcheon was the top server (11/11-one ace). Mellinger and Green each served three aces. Hoff was the top passer (17/20) and spiker (13/15-seven kills). Brown had six kills; and Mellinger, two. Mellinger had seven blocks; and Hoff, three.
Nevaeh Dickens paced GBC with eight points.
