UPPER GLADE – Going on the road in tournament play isn’t easy.
But Ravenswood’s boys basketball team knew a win Friday night would eliminate a school bus ride this week in regional play if they could unseat No. 1 seed Webster on its home court.
A 57-40 victory did just that for Mick Price’s crew.
Ravenswood not only claimed the Class AA Region 1, Section 2 crown but earned one more home game this season on the Mick Price Court at the Old Gymnasium. Ravenswood will meet East Fairmont in a Class AA Region 1 Co-Final on Thursday. Webster is forced to go to Fairmont Senior.
“It was important to our kids to get back home,” Price said.
Ravenswood jumped on the Highlanders 15-8 at the end of one and never looked back. The Devils also outscored WC, 16-9 and 18-15 in the second and third quarters, respectively. The two were even at 8-8 in the fourth.
“Our team played with great focus. We played great defense. We held a team to 40 points, who scored 71 on us the last time we played up there,” Price said. “We played with great enthusiasm and executed well offensively. We got on top of them and stayed on top of them. We made it very tough to score.”
Speaking of scoring, Riley Heatherington produced a game-high 25 for Ravenswood. The junior standout also finished with 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots.
Isiah Morgan and Stephen Dawson also scored in double figures with 11 each. Dawson added seven rebounds, four assists and three blocks.
Blake Bennett and Jayden Rhodes scored three each while Hayden Mandrake finished with two.
Ravenswood was 4-of-9 from the 3-point line as Bennett, Rhodes, Morgan and Dawson knocked down shots from behind the arc.
Ravenswood was 18-of-33 overall from the floor and 17-of-23 at the free throw line.
Dalton Gray was Webster’s top scorers with 14.
Ravenswood’s showdown with Fairmont East is set for 7 p.m. Thursday.
It’s a chance to play at home and with that comes the opportunity to punch one of eight tickets to the Class AA field for next week’s West Virginia High School Boys State Basketball Tournament at the Charleston Civic Center Coliseum.
