Jo Ann Raines

On Sunday, December 27, 2020, Jo Ann Raines of Ripley WV, wife and loving mother passed away after a short illness at the age of 82. Jo Ann was born on June 28, 1938 in Ripley, WV. In 1960 she married Paul Raines. They raised two sons, Nolan of Columbus, OH, and Andrew of San Diego, CA.

Jo Ann is preceded in death by her husband Paul, father, Guy “Red” Landfried, mother Sada, and brother Guy “Eddie.” She is survived by son Nolan (Michelle) and granddaughters, Kara, Leila, Mia and by son Andrew (Karen). Jo Ann is also survived by her sister Mary Sue Casto and husband Bob, Mary Sue’s son Tommy and wife Shali.

Jo Ann enjoyed being hostess to an annual 4th of July Party in Ripley where upwards of 80 people would attend. Family, friends and passersby were welcome to watch the parade in the front yard and then enjoy a picnic before heading down to the Courthouse. Jo Ann enjoyed traveling with her family. Many stories are told of the bus trips with Mary Sue and Bob, trips to the Myrtle Beach camping with the sons, and larger beach trips with Paul’s brothers, sisters, and families. Family cruises were a favorite which included trips to the Caribbean and Alaska. She started sending goodie “care packages” when Nolan and Andrew went to college. The care packages followed them around the country as they moved. This tradition continued with the granddaughters when she became Nana. And favorite meals were ready when her sons and their families returned home to visit: Creamed tomato’s for breakfast, baked steak, green beans, mashed potatoes, and the famous rum cake for dinner. Jo Ann was a great wife, mom, sister, daughter, Nana and friend. She will be missed by all.

Jo Ann was a devoted Christian and spent many summers volunteering at the Jackson County Fair and the World Hunger Booth. Donations, in lieu of flowers, are requested to be sent to Calvary United Methodist Church of Ripley or Hospice Care of West Virginia.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date. Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, is serving the family. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family by visiting
