Allen Ray “Whitey” Casto, 75, of Mineral Wells, WV, passed away January 2, 2020 in Camden Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg, following a brief illness.

He was born, September 7, 1944 in Ravenswood, WV, the son of the late George and Georgia Elah (Pringle) Casto. His brother, Lloyd Casto and his sister, Daisy Gump also preceded him in death.

Whitey was a retired mechanic and school bus driver for the Jackson County Board of Education.  He was the former owner and operator of Whitey’s Garage in Cottageville and the current co-owner, with his wife, of Sunset Farms and Lazy S Tack Shop. Many depended on his experience and knowledge with their tack.

Whitey, as his many friends knew him, was a well-known accomplished horseman. He was a lifelong trainer of horses and for many years he showed Western Pleasure and Halter classes in Jackson County, West Virginia and surrounding counties. Whitey attributed his interest in horses to his uncle, Archie Casto and close friend, Ken Finley. He and his wife, Donna raised and bred Registered Quarter Horses as well as Paints and they enjoyed buying and training struggling colts. Later in life he had a fondness for mules and did a lot of trail rides with his wife and friends. He attended many local horse shows and the Jackson County Junior Fair with his tack trailer. He had won many awards and was always ready to help the younger generation to become better with their showing skills and horsemanship.

He was a member of the Jackson County Horse Club, Inc. and Cottageville Lodge #54 AF & AM and the Ohio Valley and South Eastern Ohio Horseman’s Association’s.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Donna L. (Salser) Casto; son, Allen R. Casto, II, of Cottageville; sisters, Vivian Williams of Ravenswood and Samantha Salser of Fairborn, OH, and his faithful companion, his Australian Blue Heeler, Ty.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to folks that brought food, stayed, comforted and cared for Whitey and helped with the farm, fed the horses and Ty and sent prayers.

A time of visitation will be held from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Sunday, January 5, 2020, at Casto Funeral Home, Ravenswood, WV.
