It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of longtime Ravenswood resident, Paul S. Kerns, 92, on May 21, 2019.
Paul was the son of the late Stewart W. and Elizabeth Hardesty Kerns. He was born on July 30, 1926, in Cairo, WV, in Ritchie County. He was drafted into the US Army and sent to Manilla, Philippines toward the end of World War II and was honorably discharged in December of 1946. April, 1949, he enlisted into the US Air Force where he served his country until his honorable discharge in January, 1956. He married Edith “Toots” Leaman from Cairo, WV on August 15, 1951. They became friends with many people during their several years on a bowling league at Ren-Dor Lanes, currently Pike Street. They enjoyed 65 years together up to her passing in 2016.
Paul retired from Kaiser Aluminum in 1988 with 30 years of service. After his retirement, he kept active working for many Ravenswood residents repairing or remodeling whatever was requested. Even with only an 8th grade education, Paul was a self-taught handyman. He could fix anything! With all the work he did around the town, he also worked for WesBanco as a maintenance man for many years.
He is survived by his sons, Mark (Penny) Kerns, and Jeff Kerns (Alice Lowery); grandchildren, Samantha (Brandon) Stutler, and Alan Kerns (partner, Jana); great grandchildren, Shasta, Andrew, Bryant, and Brantley; and niece, Sue Koerber of Ravenna, Ohio.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Kerns; a son, Alan Eugene Kerns; great granddaughter, Angel Stutler; brother, Homer “Jim” Kerns; and sister, Nell Jane.
The family would like to thank the wonderful people at Ravenswood Care Center for all their hard work and for bringing smiles to Paul’s face in his last few years of life. Also, special thanks to Sally, Hannah and Vicky with Jackson Home Health.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
Roush Funeral Home in Ravenswood is assisting the family with arrangements.
