On March 19, 2018 at 6:10am, Leo Stearns, 92 of Ripley, was given a new body and went home with his Jesus to live forever more. At his passing, he was at the Hubbard Hospice House in Charleston after a long illness. Leo was born on September 11, 1925, in Ambrosia, WV.
Leo was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Earl and Lillie Mae (Hoffman) Stearns; his brothers Howard, Charles, Leonard “Coots”, Franklin, and Paul Stearns; his sisters Margaret Holcomb, Magdeline Cottrill, Eleta Roach, Marcellene Turner, and Ruth Stearns; his son Gary Stearns; his grandsons Derek Fox and Stephen Stearns; and his first spouse, Opal (Harmon) Stearns.
Surviving are his wife of thirty years, Marjorie Helen Stearns, daughter Lisa (Randy) Fox of Jacksonville, FL; sons Michael Stearns of Rockbridge, OH, Robert Stearns, Clinton AR, Charlie Stearns, Point Pleasant, WV; Stepdaughters Theresa, Rebecca, and Mary Fay; Stepsons Mark and Michael (Patty) Fay, and Stephen (Sarah) Gandee; 18 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Leo was a veteran serving in World War II in the Company D 331st Infantry, 83rd Division of the US Army. His tour was in Europe where he earned many distinguished military awards. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 107. He retired after working many years for the Mason County Sheriff’s Department. He has been a member of Ripley Tabernacle Baptist Church since 2004, previous member of Fairplain Union Church and First Nazarene Church of Point Pleasant.
Visitation will be held at Waybright’s Funeral Home, Ripley, WV on Wednesday evening March 21, 2018 from 5:00 – 8:00pm. Funeral services will be conducted at Ripley Tabernacle Baptist Church on Thursday March 22, 2018 at 11:00am with visitation an hour before the services. Burial with military rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard will be at Salt Hill Church Cemetery.
