Joseph Hershel Carte, 89, of Cottageville, WV, (Evergreen Hills Community) passed away February 16, 2018 at his beloved home following an extended illness.
He was born December 21, 1928 in Nallen, WV, a son of the late Joseph Powell and Thelma Gray (Hinkle) Carte. In addition to his parents he was preceded by his wife Delores Jean (Roberts) Carte; brothers, Charles G., Kenneth R., and Lowell David Carte.
He was a retired coal miner from A.E.P. and was a former employee of Kaiser Aluminum, Ravenswood, WV. He was a United States Army veteran and enjoyed gardening, playing cards and family events. He was the former co-owner and operator of J & J Fabric Shop with his late wife Jean.
Survivors include his daughters, Regina (Richard) Newbrough of Albany, OH, Beverly (Gary) Price of Wharton, WV, Brenda (Joel) Freier of Cutler, OH and Marty Carte of Cottageville; brother, James Marshall (Shirley) Carte of San Jose, CA; sister, Janet (Garnet) Albert of Roanoke, VA; grandchildren, Lisa Jo (Bart) Green, Keith and Deena Price, Nathan (Susan) Freier, Ian (Heather) Lynn, Olivia (Chris) Kaptis, Josh (Heather) Freier, Lynsey Kelly; sister in law Brenda Smitherman and nephews Kenny and Scott Carte; 13 great grandchildren.
Service will be Tuesday ~ 2 p.m. February 20, 2018 at the Casto Funeral Home, Evans, WV, with Rev. Gerald B. Sayre officiating. Burial will follow in the Jackson County Memory Gardens Cemetery, Cottageville, WV. Military honors will be provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The family would like to extend their thanks to Kanawha Hospice Care.
