Rowena Stone Fleming, 90, of Ravenswood, WV, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 22, 2016.
She was born in Parkersburg, WV, on August 17, 1926, the daughter of the late Vernon Stone and Virginia Ronk Stone Packard. She was married to the late William B. Fleming for 61 years until his passing.
Rowena grew up in Belpre, Ohio, and graduated from Belpre High School in 1944, and the Camden-Clark School of Nursing, Parkersburg, WV, in 1947. She began working at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley, WV, in 1965. She was a surgical nurse and later supervisor of the emergency room for 19 of her 25 years at Jackson General.
After retiring, she was a volunteer with the Mid-Ohio Valley Red Cross Chapter. She worked on several disaster teams with floods and hurricanes in the United States and the Caribbean. For her work, she received the Rotary Club Paul Harris Foundation Fellowship in 2009 for “service above self”.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Ravenswood where she served as an Elder and member of the United Presbyterian Women. She served as President of the Ravenswood VFW Post 6669 Auxiliary and was also on the Jackson County Health Department’s Home Health Advisory Council. Mrs. Fleming is a charter member of the Old Hickory Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by one daughter, Christina Landis and husband Terry, Ripley, WV; four sons, William H. Fleming and wife Kelly, Greenville, NC; Rev. Benjamin S. Fleming and wife Cheryl, Carson City, NV; Trent P. Fleming and wife Judy, Cincinnati, OH; and Dr. Patrick M. Fleming and wife Leigh, Martinsburg, WV; eleven grandchildren, Justin Landis and wife Amaris, Atlanta, GA; Jared Landis and wife Onaisa, Washington, D.C.; Emily Hales and husband Todd, Raleigh, NC; Will Fleming, Raleigh, NC; Benjamin Fleming and wife Becky, Puyallup, WA; Rebecca Iaeger and husband Will, Carson City, NV; Amanda Vietti and husband Steve, Vacaville, CA; Traci Graziani and husband Mike, Columbus, OH; Tina Anuszkiewicz and husband Jake, Cincinnati, OH; Thomas Fleming, Durham, NC; Liza Fleming, Philadelphia, PA; seven great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Maree Skaff and husband Joseph, Charleston, WV.
The family expresses their sincerest gratitude for her special caregivers, Stacie Mullins, Cheryl Sandy, Roxie Stanley, Josie Kerns, Bobbie Lucas, Linda Stephens, and Patty Stone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Fleming; two brothers; two sisters; and a great-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Ravenswood with Reverend Benjamin Fleming officiating. Friends may visit the family at the church on Saturday, October 1, from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, time of service. Burial will follow in Ravenswood Cemetery.
