Donald T. Harvey, 90, of Ripley, passed away July 3, 2016 at CAMC Memorial Division in Charleston, WV.
Born March 26, 1926 in Delbarton, WV, he was the son of the late Wilson and Norma Trent Harvey. He graduated from Logan High School in 1944 and enlisted in the Army. He was trained and served as a surgical technician in the 59th Armored Infantry Battalion in WWII. He was a proud member of the VFW post 107. After obtaining his degree in metallurgical engineering from Virginia Tech he first worked at Revere Ware in Baltimore, Maryland then with Kaiser Aluminum in Spokane, Washington. He and his wife, Ollie, moved to Ripley in 1958. Don was one of the initial hires for Kaiser’s then new Ravenswood Works. He was the Chief of the Physical Testing Lab and took great pride in his job. He reluctantly took his official retirement in 1997 at the age of 71. Don and Ollie had immediately fallen in love with Ripley and considered it a wonderful place to raise their family. Don was active in the community over the years. He was always willing to help anyone in need and enjoyed contributing to the betterment of our little town. Some of his activities included PTA and the Lions Club in which he was a past president. He was a lifetime member of the Ripley Rotary Club. A member of the American Society for Metals, he thoroughly enjoyed travelling all over the country to meetings and conferences and spoke of this often. He was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities including Sunday School Superintendent for several years. He and his friend Dudley Jones were the “unofficial air conditioning repairmen” at the church and his girls have many happy memories of playing in the churchyard while the men toiled away.
Don was the father of three daughters who like to say they have the Best.Daddy.Ever. He had a wonderful sense of humor and even though his body had become frail his mind and that sense of humor were still very sharp.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ollie Mae Phillips Harvey; daughters Lea Ann Cline and her husband Charlie of Beckley, Teresa Carmichael (his best buddy) of Ripley and Michele Sturkey of Huntersville, NC; sister Lois Trent of Monaville, WV; grandchildren Eric Cline, Evan Cline, Alyssa Parkulo and her husband Travis, Andrea Cline and Teresa Marie Sturkey; and special neighbors Bob and Jeannie Smith whom he considered family. He is also survived by extended family and many friends who will cherish the memory of this kind and gentle man.
A Celebration of the Life of Donald T. Harvey will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 7, 2016 (his mother’s birthday) at Epworth United Methodist Church, Ripley, with Rev. Ford Price and Rev. Dr. Ken Krimmel officiating. Burial with Military Rites provided by the Jackson County Honor Guard will be in Jackson County Memory Gardens. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 6, 2016 at Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley and one hour prior to the service at the church.
The family would like to thank the staff at Jackson General Hospital and Dr. Arif Malik for the exceptional, above and beyond, care that they gave Don. Also to the staff at CAMC SV-IMC and SICU units. And a special thanks to his guardian angel, Sue Nolan FNP, who he had held in high regard for many years.
