J&M Industrial located at 720 Jack Burlingame Drive in Millwood is a used and surplus process equipment facility. They buy, sell, consign, and broker quality surplus industrial process packaging machinery for the chemical, plastics, and mineral processing industries.

The company has been in operation at the Millwood warehouse location since 2000. Co-owners Brad Smith and Sheldon Sharp acquired ownership in 2014. Working with many customers over the years, their main focus has been solid material handling with some liquid processing equipment as well. One of the industries served is Aerospace. J&M Industrial has recently grown their relationship with Elon Musk’s SpaceX by providing several pieces of quality industrial equipment in the past year.

SpaceX is currently working on a project called Starship. After locating J&M Industrial in an online search, they reached out to Sharp regarding parts they needed for the spacecraft.

“Their launch engineers had found our equipment online and they contacted me and informed us they could use a particular component,” Sharp said. “So we worked out a deal.”

According to spacex.com/starship, SpaceX’s Starship spacecraft and Super Heavy rocket (collectively referred to as Starship) represent a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. Starship will be the world’s most powerful launch vehicle ever developed, with the ability to carry in excess of 100 metric tonnes to Earth orbit. Drawing on an extensive history of launch vehicle and engine development programs, SpaceX has been rapidly iterating on the design of Starship with orbital-flight targeted for 2020.

Earlier this month, J&M delivered a piece of equipment to SpaceX in Brownsville, Texas, that will go toward helping launch humans to the moon and Mars.

“To be involved in this project is really fun,” Sharp said. “You wouldn’t think that we would ever have the potential to have our equipment help launch a Starship into space, but that’s really neat.”

Sharp said everyone at J&M Industrial could not be more proud of what they do.

“Being a part of this project makes me proud,” Sharp said. “It just goes to show that even a small company in Millwood, West Virginia, can make a big difference in the world.”
