The Jackson County Public Library Board of Trustees called a special meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at the Ripley branch.
Four items were listed on the agenda for discussion:
• Discussion of West Virginia Consolidated Public Retirement Board Monthly Payments for July and August 2019.
• Discussion of West Central Library Cooperative including a Memorandum of Understanding.
• Executive session - Discussion regarding a personnel matter involving Library Director John Faria.
• Return to regular session.
Due to issues that have been addressed at previous meetings regarding the library budget, pay raises for the library staff, and topics involving Faria, many members of the public have taken interest and began attending meetings to share their opinions and ask questions during the public comment portion of the meeting.
Several members of the community attended the special meeting expecting to have issues and concerns addressed; however, the line for public comment was not on the agenda as presented.
At approximately 5:35 p.m., the board advised the public they would be going into executive session and asked them to exit into the hallway of the library.
Approximately one-hour later, Attorney Kevin Harris opened the door and advised the public they could re-enter as the meeting was going back into regular session.
The board made those in attendance aware that no action was taken during the executive session and moved to adjourn the meeting.
As the board members began to exit the room, members of the public stated they had comments and questions they would like to be answered.
At that point, Library Board of Trustees president Tandi Durst stated there would be no public comments addressed at the meeting.
When again questioned by the public as to why they would not be allowed to speak or why the public comment section was not listed on the agenda, Durst said they were not required to which Harris confirmed.
The next regular meeting of the Library Board of Trustees will be Oct. 17. The agenda will be published once available.
