The American Cancer Society's 2019 Relay for Life of Jackson County is set for Friday at Washington's Riverfront Park in Ravenswood.

Relay for Life is a major fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS), said Holley Durham, ACS community manager.

"Relay for Life is not just funded for one particular type of cancer. It's for all cancers. So it's very beneficial for people to get involved with the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life so that they can support all different types of cancer research," Durham said.

This year's theme is Dr. Seuss: "I do not like cancer here or there; I do not like cancer anywhere."

Pre-registration begins at 4 p.m. The Relay begins at 5 p.m. and will continue until midnight. Participants can register online at or by calling 1-800-227-2345.

A survivor dinner sponsored by Jackson General Hospital will be held immediately following the survivor lap.

A luminaria ceremony is scheduled for dusk. This event is the soul of Relay for Life.

According to the ACS, "Luminarias honor every life touched by cancer. You can dedicate them to a loved one lost, someone currently battling, or anyone who’s overcome it. When you attend a Relay event, you’ll see the Luminarias decorated with names and sometimes messages to the people they’re dedicated to. After dark, Relay participants share an emotional moment when each Luminaria is lit in remembrance of a life touched by cancer. Together, we take a moment of silence to remember the loved ones they’re dedicated to. When you make a donation for a Luminaria it helps fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to help save lives."

Other Relay Sponsors include Suddenlink by Altice, Constellium, Kiddy Korner Child Care, City National Bank, Wesbanco, Ravenswood Federal Credit Union, Clinton Horn Chem Inspections, LLC, and Garnette Plumley.
