On Jan. 12, the Ripley High School theater department hosted the Area II Theater Festival at Ravenswood High School.

The four schools who competed at the festival were Ripley, Parkersburg, Parkersburg South, and the Wood County Technical Center.

Categories of competition included one-act plays and tech projects such as costume design, construction, make-up, publicity, props, masks, and short films.

Under the direction of Christina Iman, Ripley took honors for their “Digging up the Boys” act, which will advance to the state festival in Morgantown, March 14-16.

Evan Bain, Sydney Scarberry, Sidney Sheets, and Trenton Hilbert won acting honors. Scarberry and Bain received All Area Cast. Hilbert received Best Supporting Actor and Sheets received Best Supporting Actress.

Advancing to the state festival for make-up are Scarberry, Ann Blizzard, Levi Simpkins, and Jane Purkey.

Purkey also advances for costume construction.

“I’m really proud of this group,” Iman said. “They have worked hard and deserve to be recognized for their outstanding achievements.”

At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 21, the group will perform their Festival Showcase at Ripley High School where they will present “Digging up the Boys.” The students will also perform their monologues and other projects they have prepared.

Following the state festival in March, the students will present their next production at Ripley High School, “You Can’t Take It With You,” in April. Showtimes will be 7 p.m. on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 14.
