A mother and son from Roane County were killed in a single-vehicle crash last week when their vehicle went off the road into a creek.

The victims were Lillie Ann Brown Miller, 38, and her son, Jesse Russell Miller, 11, both of Spencer.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Jackson County Sheriff Tony Boggs said.

Lillie Miller’s vehicle, a 2002 Volkswagen Beetle, went off the right side of U.S. 33 between 12:30 and 12:45 p.m. last Friday and landed in a creek.

Boggs said the crash occurred between Moll Run Road and Joe’s Run in the Frozen Camp area.

Deputies had to break out a window to get to the victims, who were pronounced dead at Jackson General Hospital.

The Times Record of Spencer reported Jesse Miller was a sixth-grader at Spencer Middle School.

The paper reported that Roane County Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard R. Duncan sent out an “all-call” telephone message to alert SMS families about the passing of a classmate because school had already been dismissed for Christmas break.
