Two people were charged after a traffic stop resulted in the discovery of numerous baggies of methamphetamine and other contraband.
Brandon Lee Estep, 30, 516 West Main St., Apt. 2, Spencer, was charged with possession with intent to deliver (methamphetamine). Magistrate Laura Pursley set bond at $50,000.
Around 11:40 a.m. on Dec. 18, Deputy J.T. Hurt saw a black Ford Escape parked at the southern end of the Kenna park and ride. The vehicle was parked in a manor not consistent with someone leaving their vehicle there, according to a criminal complaint.
Dustin Shelton, 25, Nitro, was charged with misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance. His bond was set at $500.
Upon approaching the vehicle, Hurt noticed that there were two male occupants. Hurt exited his patrol vehicle and approached the drivers window,. As he approached, Hurt noticed the driver, later identified as Estep, was attempting to conceal something before opening the door.
Upon opening the driver’s side door, Hurt noticed a clear bag located on the driver’s pants containing a substance he suspected was methamphetamine.
Hurt had Estep get out of the vehicle, where he performed a pat-down to ensure there were no weapons. After the pat-down, Hurt escorted Estep to the back of the of his patrol car. While entering the car, Hurt observed Estep drop a small gray and black pouch onto the ground.
Hurt continued to place Estep into the patrol car, after securing Estep, Hurt opened the small pouch and noticed it also contained several small clear bags containing suspected methamphetamine.
Hurt returned to the vehicle he pulled over and removed the passenger, whom he also patted down, according to the criminal complaint. He handcuffed and detained the passenger, then returned to his patrol vehicle, where he placed Estep into handcuffs, according to the complaint.
Upon opening the door, Hurt observed another small bag containing a suspected methamphetamine that Estep allegedly had attempted to discard.
Hurt removed Estep from the car and placed him in handcuffs, at which time another small bag with suspected methamphetamine fell to the ground.
According to the criminal complaint, Hurt returned to the vehicle to perform a search and found a set of black scales located in the center console. Hurt opened the scales and observed another small bag containing suspected methamphetamine.
Hurt also found a small red container with an unidentified white powder. Located with the red container, Hurt found a small baggie containing suspected marijuana.
Hurt also located an unused needle and another clear bag containing suspected methamphetamine. During the investigation, Hurt also discovered a glass smoking device.
