While Ravenswood didn’t get the repeat it had hoped for on the links of high school golf, they did earn the next best thing.
At Ogelbay Park in Wheeling, the Red Devils finished as the runner-up in Class A following last season’s state championship.
Ravenswood finished with a two-day total of 510 to land in the No. 2 spot of the team leaderboard. Wheeling Central captured the title with a 36-hole total of 486.
Ravenswood senior Ciah Kennedy led the way for first-year head coach Kevin McClung’s Red Devils. Kennedy had rounds of 78 and 81 to earn Class A All-State honors.
Junior Devin Raines fired back-to-back rounds of 88. Junior Gavin Fox shot a 93 on Day 1 and improved by nine strokes the next day with an 82. Junior Phillip Goodwin had rounds of 96 and 108.
“I’m very proud of our team,” McClung said. “Making it back to the State Tournament after losing two golfers, who are now playing college golf, is not an easy task.
“I’m sure many didn’t expect Ravenswood to be in Wheeling but these boys stepped up in the challenge. Ciah Kennedy played so solid all year long. He is such a great leader who leads by example.
“Gavin Fox shows flashes of such talent. He has the ability to hit shots that few kids can.
“Devin Raines has made tremendous strides all season long. He has such a great feel and touch around the greens. He seems to always manage to grind out a par from tough spots.
“Phillip Goodwin managed to be a dependable scorer for me all season long.
“(Freshman) Jacob Coberly’s first year out gave him a chance to see and experience what it takes to be a champion. He has shown great promise and has a bright future.
“We lose Ciah to graduation but return the other four. I’ll look for the juniors to become leaders next year as we plan on making the Wheeling trip an annual one.”
