Barbara Layton has joined the staff of Jackson Newspapers as reporter, general manager Frank Adkins announced this week.

Layton reported for duty Monday and will work alongside editor Roger Adkins covering news and sports in Jackson County for The Jackson Herald, The Jackson Star News and

Layton, 39, worked for two years as a circulation clerk at the Jackson County Public Library in Ripley, where she organized the library’s newsletter and website, in addition to working with the public and handling a multitude of other tasks.

She also formerly worked at Highmark as a lead customer representative for six years and, prior to that, was administrative assistant at Parchment Valley Conference Center.

Layton said she is excited to become a part of the Jackson Newspapers team.

“I’ve actually wanted to do journalism since high school. It’s always something I’ve been interested in doing,” she said.

“I hope to bring some new and different story ideas to catch more readers of all ages,” Layton said. “I think a lot of the younger generation doesn’t even know what a newspaper is. I’d like to help get them back into reading the paper. It’s not all just social media.”

Editor Roger Adkins said he chose Layton because she had the right skill set to work as reporter.

“I think Barbie is going to fit in really well. We already have such a great team here and have made so many fantastic changes to the paper already,” Adkins said. “Our layout and design have been revamped and we have an increased presence on our website and on social media. I think Barbara has the right attitude and outlook to help us continue to grow.”

Layton is married to Tyson Layton and the couple have two children, Maddie, 14, and Colin, 11.
