Three Ripley Viking senior wrestlers made the awards stand in their respective individual weight classes at the 2018 West Virginia State Wrestling Tournament Saturday night at the Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

 B.J. Haynes led the trio finishing as state runner-up at 220 pounds. Haynes (42-6 as a senior) pinned Kenton Conley (Brooke) in the opening round Thursday night in 2:45; won by major decision over Colton Wright (Woodrow Wilson), 10-1, in the quarterfinals Friday morning; and won by decision over Ben Gribble (University), 3-1, Friday night to make the AAA championship finals Saturday night. There, Haynes lost by fall to Braxton Amos (Parkersburg South) in 3:15.

 Jacob Starkey battled to a third-place finish at 170 pounds to cap a super 36-4 senior season. Starkey pinned Alex Shriver (Morgantown) in 2:47 in the opening round; won by decision over Isaiha Casto (St. Albans), 7-0 inthe quarterfinals; and lost by decision to Cameron Pine (Washington, eventual state champion), 9-3, in the championship semifinals Friday night. Saturday morning, Starkey rebunded to won by pinfall over Leslie Campbell (Greenbrier East) in1:14; and won by decision over Drew Parde (Huntington), 9-2, to finish in third place.

 Senior 145-pounder Hunter Burdette finished in fifth place to cap an outstanding 40-16 senior campaign. Burdette opened Thursday night with a win by decision over Jacob Smithson (Buckhannon-Upshur), 4-3; won in the quarterfinals by decision over Austin Atkins (St. Albans), 6-0; lost by fall to Stephen Carder (Parkersburg) in the championship semifinals Friday night in 2:12 in a freak turn of events. Saturday morning, Burdette lost by fall in a rematch to Jacob Smithson (Buckhannon-Upshur) in 4:50; but rebounded to won by decision over Daniel Long (Hurricane), 3-2, to claim the fifth-place medal.

 Other members of Coach Matt Smith’s Vikings competing at the 2018 state tournament included Nate Cox (106, 0-2), Luke Miller (113, 2-2), Ethan Koontz (120, 0-2) and Evan King (132, 1-2). 

 Ravenswood’s lone state qualifier, sophomore ClayTanner (145), lost consecutive bouts Thursday night and Friday morning in his second straight trip to the Big Show.
