RIPLEY - Main Street Ripley strolls into 2017 with an organization taking on an ambitious schedule of activities.
Events during the upcoming months include the “Alpine Has Talent Show” on Feb. 18, the Main Street Ripley Annual Dinner & Auction on March 18, Alpine Art Show on April 1 and “Try-A-Triathlon” on April 29.
“We have events planned every month of the year,” said Director Pam Jones. “It’s all aimed at our ultimate goal of restoring and revitalizing downtown Ripley.”
Main Street America is a national program that has been in existence for more than three decades. Introduced in 1998, Main Street Ripley is one of 14 such organizations in West Virginia communities.
“Yes, Main Street is about shopping in local businesses, but it is so much more,” Jones explained. “It is about enhancing the cultural experience, socialization in the community and generating tourism dollars. It is about improving our economy, creating jobs and fostering our community’s pride of place.”
In addition to Jones, Main Street Ripley is operated by a volunteer board of directors and related outreach efforts. Members include community advocates and stakeholders such as business owners.
Officers for 2017 are Chair Sally Blessing, Vice Chair Ron Waybright, Treasurer Larry Chancey and Secretary Ceason Ranson. Members are Freda Bradley, Helen Crum, Ollie Harvey, Marsha Humphrey (former WV Main Street Director), Monnie Landis (former Main Street Ripley Director), Suzette Lowe, Maryann Rhodes and Charessa Wilkinson.
Other affiliates are Joshua Donohew, Kasey Miller and Travis Adcock of the AmeriCorp Vista program and intern Joel Hanson of WV State University. They assist with efforts such as the historic Alpine Theatre and the Mill Creek Water Trail. In addition, Ripley has the state’s only Main Street Teens Chapter. The Ripley High students are led by teacher Tabby Craddock.
