ST. MARYS – Coach Todd R. Murray’s Red Devils fought hard, but could not handle the Williamstown Yellow Jackets’ speed and breakaway attack, falling 8-0 in the AA/A Region 4, Section 1 soccer championship game Thursday at St. Marys. The Red Devils, who closed out a 6-12-3 campaign as sectional runners-up, could not catch the same lightning in a bottle they did in knocking off favored Parkersburg Catholic in the tournament semifinal Tuesday night.
Williamstown set the tone quickly Thursday, as junior Jonathan Petty scored on a breakaway just 14 seconds into the game. That initial goal was followed by a long delay when one of the game officials was injured.
The Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 in the 16th minute when Dakota Hammer scored off an assist from Petty. Just over five minutes later, Petty scored again when his shot was deflected into the goal by a tangle of Ravenswood defenders in front of the goal.
Samuele Vesentini gave the Yellow Jackets a commanding 4-0 lead at th4e half with a goal in the 28th minute.
Williamstown scored four more goals in the second half, as Vesentitni scored in the 42nd minute; Kelton Hutchens scored in the 48th minute; Josh Fowell scored in the 50th minute; and Boston Carothers scored in the 77th minute.
Ravenswood had seven shots on goal to the Yellow jackets’ 28. The Devils closest chance came on a long shot by junior co-captain Anthony Boggs near midfield that nearly bent over the keeper and under the cross bar.
Senior Ian Hostottle had four keeper saves for Williamstown, while senior Tyler Harmon racked up 10 keeper saves and Nathan Hall, six. The Yellow Jackets had six corner kicks to non for the Devils.
Willaimstown (16-2-1) moves on the regional championship game.
Red Devils seniors, Tyler Harmon, Brett Johnson and Nick Vaughn closed out their careers in the red and black.
