A little more than seven years ago, a left-wing outfit called MoveOn.org took out a full-page ad in The New York Times (above) accusing U.S. Army Gen. David Petraeus of misrepresenting the situation regarding the American war in Iraq.

Republicans (and even a few Democrats) went bonkers. They portrayed Petraeus as a man beyond reproach, the essence of patriotism and valor.

Five years later, Petraeus resigned as director of the CIA under President Obama and confessed to having had an extramarital affair.

And now the FBI and federal prosecutors are recommending criminal charges against Petraeus for allegedly having shared classified information with his mistress.

So how is the right-wing noise machine reacting to this fall from grace by their erstwhile hero?

Well, the response has yet to take any clear form. But I’ve already read one wingnut blog post to the effect that Petraeus has been a Democrat all along.

Stay tuned for further developments.
