Masel Ruvenia Nichols Gibson, 97, died February 3, 2014 at Ravenswood Care Inn, Ravenswood, WV.  She was born September 5, 1916 in Vaughn, WV, the daughter of the late Brooks Cumberland and Gertrude Blanche Walker Nichols.

She was a member of the Pilot Club, the Jackson County Association of Retired School Employees, and was the hospital auxiliary at Jackson General Hospital, in Ripley WV.  She attended the Millsite Baptist Church in Cottageville.

Masel was a sweet and loving woman who was always quick to smile and lend a hand.  Visits to her home were filled with wonderful food and conversation, while she shared stories of growing up in the beautiful hills of West Virginia. Always active, she enjoyed gardening.  At 90, she could often be found raking her yard when the weather was good. She loved to draw and created gorgeous pressed flower art that her family will enjoy in the coming generations.

Masel was the oldest of eight children and remained close to them. Family was important to her; she nourished their spirits and they nourished hers.  She married Ben Gibson in 1940 and had five children. Her early married years were filled with farming, housekeeping, and dealing the antics of her children.  After raising them she went to work feeding more children as a cook at Sissonville Elementary School for 19 years. It is told that her yeast rolls were the best in the county.

She is survived by her children: Sandra Sue Gibson Hoff of Cottageville, Larry Wayne of Sissonville, Danny Lee of Sissonville, Rockne Benjamin (Charlene) of Columbus Man, Indiana; and Randall Ray (Kim) of Sissonville, WV. Her grandchildren: Teresa Lynn Hoff Poole of Lewisburg, WV; Elva Rebecca of Cottageville, WV; Timothy Gibson of Sissonville; Gail Gibson Fisher of Charleston, Adam Ray Gibson of Sissonville; Meghan Gibson Scarberry of Ravenswood; Matthew Gibson of Sissonville; and Christopher Gibson of Danville Ky. Nine great grandchildren: Jessica and Montana Poole; Kayla, Lauren, and Kasey Hoff; Blaine Hoff; Jacob and Jace Fisher; and Colton Ray Gibson.  Her siblings: Sylvia Nichols Shepherd, Estes Nichols, Ralph Nichols, Brooks Nichols, and Madeleine Nichols Beavers.

She is preceded in death by her husband Ben Gibson, her grandson Ben Hoff; daughter-in-law, Judy Rollins Gibson; son-in-law Lloyd W. Hoff, her parents; her sister, Eula Nichols Austin Klomann; and brothers Berman (Budge) Nichols and Basil Nichols.
