Bettie Mae Caplinger, 90, of Ripley, formerly of Elkins, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010, at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley following a brief illness.


Bettie Mae Caplinger, 90, of Ripley, formerly of Elkins, passed away Friday, May 7, 2010, at Jackson General Hospital in Ripley following a brief illness.

She was born January 31, 1920, at Webster Springs, a daughter of the late Harry and Gertrude (Isenhart) Harris. Bettie graduated from Webster Springs High School in 1938 and from Davis Memorial School of Nursing in 1942 and worked as an RN at the Golden Clinic in Elkins, where she met and later married Marvin L. Caplinger on August 8, 1942. She later worked many years as an operating room nurse at the Memorial General Hospital in Elkins. She retired from Memorial General in 1982. She loved to sing, read, needlepoint, and craft.

Bettie spent her life dedicated to caring for others. She was kind, generous of heart and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will long be remembered for her smile and sweet disposition.

She was an active member of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Ripley where she was a member of the Epworth Chior, Ladies Circle and her favorite, the Tuesday morning “Muffins and More” group. She was a member of the Eastern Star and past member of the Pilot Club of Jackson County.

Bettie is survived by her daughter Sandra and her son-in-law Max Elza, whom she loved like a son, of Ripley, where she made her home; beloved grandson Lee Sanders and his wife Becky of Elkins; and great-grandchildren Casey, Alexa and Ryan. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren Mike Elza, Kevin Elza and Theresa Ends, whom she thought dearly of, and her step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Marvin in 1991 and her grandson Christopher Sanders in 1983.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 23, at the Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley. Friends may call on the family one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. There will also be a memorial service held at a later date at the Tomblyn Funeral Home, Elkins.
