Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital is accepting donations of unused prosthetic arms and legs for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

The need is great because of the number of people who have lost limbs and the cost in the hemisphere's poorest country. The average cost for an above-the knee artificial leg is more than $16,000.

John Griffin, lead prosthetist at Orthopedic Rehabilitation Systems at the hospital, said people have unused prosthetics because of death or because they have been replaced with more advanced models.

Donated limbs will be refurbished and distributed through The Barr Foundation, a non-profit established to help improve the quality of life for amputees.
