Ravenswood, W.Va. -

In 2009 Ravenswood High School was honored with the Charleston Gazette’s GEISA Award (Gazette Excellence in Sports Award) for scoring the most points among state school athletics for reaching a state tournament in six separate sports for the 2008-2009 school year.

The Ravenswood Red Devil football team began the trend that fall racking up an 8-2 regular season record, good enough for a number-seven slot in the Class AA state playoffs. In the opening round, the Red Devils rolled over Webster County, 46-22, at home before being bounced on the road by the eventual State Champion Grafton Bearcats, 41-7.

In the same season, the boy’s cross country team made their run through sectional and regional meets to find themselves atop the mountain for the Class AA state championship for the ninth straight year in a row edging out season favorite and number-one ranked Berkley Spring by four points. Nathan Reese earned individual state-runner up honors.

In golf, Ravenswood was looking to defend their title from 2007 in the AA state championship, but fell just short, however, the team was led by seniors Joel Miller and Tom Moss who ended their seasons as All-LKC honorees.

In basketball a historic season for both boys and girls squads culminated in the girls first state tournament appearance since 1997, and yet another state basketball title for the boys.

The girls recorded a 20-7 mark advancing through regional’s to down Shady Springs, 58-46 in the first round, but was upset by eventual state champ Summers County 68-45. Ashley Prince was awarded the AA All-Tournament team as well as Second-Team All-State. Teammate and current player, Rebekah Samples, earned Third-Team All-State.

In the way of the boy’s tournament, a 23-6 record prompted the Red Devils to run through the dance unscathed for their second state title in four years (2006) and their second straight trip to Charleston. Ravenswood downed Webster County in the opening round, 45-43.

They defeated Oak Hill in narrow escape, 40-38, and eventually were crowned after downing defending state champ Wyoming East, 62-52. Current players Luke Murray and Ryan Benson earned All-Tournament honors, while Bruce Patterson was awarded an All-State selection for the season.

Come spring, the Red Devil boy’s runners made their mark in track and field again earning AA state-runner up for the third time in four years.

Nathan Rees earned the High Point Award winning three individual events and joined his teammates Derek Murray, Matt Knowlton, and Alex Cole as the 4 x 800 relay champions.

Ravenswood will look to secure the GEISA award for the second straight year as the football team earned another state playoff spot this past season, boy’s cross country finished eighth in the state, while Matt Knowlton finished fourth individually, and currently Ravenswood’s boy’s and girls basketball teams are fighting for another spot in state tournament at the Charleston Civic Center.

Among the names on the trophy are eight time winner Class AAA Winfield High, four-time winner Class AAA Bridgeport High, and Class AA Oak Glenn. The award began in 1996-1997.
