The Ripley Vikings overcame the Lincoln Panthers but fell to the Cabell-Midland Knights this weekend at the Mountain State Athletic Conference’s Grid-O-Rama scrimmage showcase at Laidley Field.
Opening Saturday’s matchups on the second day of the 16-team showcase, Ripley won 14-6 against Lincoln during a 9 a.m. game. Cabell-Midland’s Knights kept the Vikings at bay, however, in the Vike’s second scrimmage of the day. Cabell came out ahead 34-14.
Parkersburg High School came away with the win last week when its golfers met with those from Ripley and Ravenswood at Greenhills Country Club.
Both of the games played by the Ripley boys’ soccer team this weekend were decided by a margin of one goal.
The first, against Capital Friday night at Memorial Stadium in Ripley, worked out 1-0 in the Vikings’ favor. The second, against Greenbrier East Saturday afternoon at Greenbrier, left the Vikings behind 3-2.
In the game against Capital, Jesse Casto scored the game-winning goal with 8:45 to go in the game. The score came off a throw in from Logan Welling, said Coach Tim Ross.

For starters, Ripley’s win total improved nine games from the campaign of 2008.
The Vikings were ranked throughout the season, at one point climbing to ninth. And while it was a loss, in sectional play the Vikings had eventual state champion Parkersburg on the brink of elimination before falling in a shootout.
