RIPLEY – George Chandler, Jr., 82, of Ripley formerly of Lincoln County passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at home with his family by his side after a long illness.

He was born January 2, 1928, in Spurlocksville, to George Chandler, Sr. And Leota Cooper Chandler. He loved the Lord and was a member of West Ripley Church of Christ and past member of Bear Branch Church of Christ and Sandyville Church of Christ.

He was a graduate of Marshall College and taught school in Lincoln County where he was elected circuit clerk at the age of 22 and was elected to three consecutive six-year terms.  He was President of the Lincoln County Young Democrat Club, Vice-President of the West Virginia Young Democrats, President of the West Virginia Circuit Clerk’s Association, and Chairman of the Jackson County Democrat Executive Committee, and a Mason for over 60 years.

He owned a food market, was co-owner of Spencer Truck & Implement Co., Inc; he was a building contractor in West Virginia and South Carolina, active in the lumber business, owner of Ripley Wood Products, Tru Value Hardware, and Carpet & More.  He helped establish the Jackson County Livestock Market and served as its first president.

He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother, Peachie Linville Chandler; infant son, Terry; brothers Jess and Dana “Buster”; sisters Sallie Atkins, Reba Egnor,  Eva Gae Paxton and Ethylene Chandler.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Olivene Linville Chandler; son,  Rodney Hale of Alum Creek; daughter, Sharon Chandler of Ripley; grandson, Lee Hale; granddaughter:            Leah Nicole

Hale; great-grandson,            Jacob Hale all of Alum Creek; brother, Troy Chandler of Spencer and

many nieces, nephews and a host of friends, all of whom he loved very much

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Friday, July 23, 2010 at Curry Funeral Home, 2097 Childress Road, Alum Creek, with the minister Mike Foresha officiating.  Burial will follow in the Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to HospiceCare, 1606 Kanawha Blvd. W., Charleston, WV 25312.    

George will always be remembered as an unselfish person who reached out a helping hand to all.
