William Michael “Mike” Slaven, 70, of Ripley, WV, passed away April 12, 2018, at Camden-Clark Medical Center, Parkersburg, following a brief illness.

He was born August 17, 1947, in Charleston, WV, and was the son of the late H.W. “Bill” and Mary M. (Fry) Slaven. In addition to his parents, his brother, Gary “Fuzz” Slaven also preceded him in death.

Mike was a 1965 graduate of Ripley High School and a United States Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War where he received a Purple Heart.  He attended West Virginia State College and West Virginia University-Parkersburg, receiving a degree in criminal justice.

He was a former private investigator for Skeen & Skeen, attorneys at law, Ripley, WV, and was a retired parole officer for Jackson County.  He was a member and past commander for VFW Post 5501, Ripley, and he enjoyed computers, camping and fishing.

Survivors include his sister, Janyce (Slaven) Watkins of Ravenswood; niece, Megan N. Watkins; nephews, Jeremy S. Watkins (Michele) and Joseph R. Watkins (Brenda), his former wife, Janice Strickland Goff; stepsons, James Anderson and David Anderson; great nieces and nephews, Macie Watkins and Harmony Watkins, Levi Watkins, Joey Watkins and Jackson Watkins, and a very special friend, Sonja Hudson Ice.

Service will be 1 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2018, at Casto Funeral Chapel, Evans, WV, with John Gunter officiating. Burial will follow in Jackson County Memory Gardens, Cottageville, WV, with military honors by the Jackson County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. until time of service on Thursday, at the funeral home.
