Power company crews have restored power to the majority of customers who experienced outages due to this weekend's winter storm.

According to Appalachian Power's website, this weekend's storm knocked out power to over 900 homes in Jackson County.

ORIGINAL STORY

According to Appalachian Power, this weekend's winter storm has knocked out power to over 900 homes in Jackson County.

According to the company's website, this weekend's storm has knocked out power to 922 of their 14,176 customers in Jackson County.

In a statement released prior to the storm hitting our region, the power company said they expected outages to occur due to the heavy, wet type of snow that was expected to accompany this weekend's storm.

“Wet heavy snow is one of the most damaging weather events for our electric system, because its weight brings down trees and power lines, and covered or closed roads slow our ability to get to the damaged poles, transformers and wires,” said Phil Wright, Appalachian Power vice president – distribution. “In addition, low temperatures are expected for the next several days, so the snow could be a problem for days to come.”

While the storm has knocked out power to 6.5% of customers in Jackson County, neighboring Roane County was harder hit by this storm.  The storm had knocked out power to over 1,200 in that county; more than half of Appalachian Power's customers in Roane County.

The National Weather Service has lifted the Winter Storm Warning for our region as this weekend's storm has now moved out of our area.  However, temperatures are expected to remain below freezing until Monday.  A statewide State of Emergency, issued by Governor Joe Manchin on Friday, does remain in effect.
