The West Virginia State Tax Department provides free assistance to all taxpayers each weekday. Taxpayers can e-mail, call, or visit a Taxpayer Services Division office located throughout the state.

If you have questions or need help with the filing of your West Virginia personal income tax return, Taxpayer Service Representatives are available from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on normal business days.

If calling from within West Virginia, you can reach a Representative toll free by calling 1-800-WVA-TAXS (1-800-982-8297). If you have already filed your state personal income tax return and seek an update on the status of your refund, you may visit the “Where’s My Refund?” section of our web site at www.wvtax.gov or call toll free 1-800-422-2075. The following information is required to check the status of a refund: the social security number listed first on the return; the dollar amount of the refund; and the filing status (single, married filing jointly, married filing separately, etc.).

Taxpayer Services’ e-mail address is: wvtaxaid@tax.state.wv.us. Information you send by electronic mail may be read in transit by others having access to routers and connections in the email pathway. You should keep this in mind and should not send sensitive information by email. Such information may include your name, address, Social Security number, federal employer identification number or West Virginia business registration number. If you have a question that requires the communication of this personal information, please call or visit the nearest Taxpayer Services location.
